Waste Free February...What is that?
It's an effort to live "waste free", essentially, which means avoiding the purchase and use of all types of products that come in packaging (food, personal care items, etc.). It's a way to discover alternative ways of living and shopping, and it's a journey to a simpler way of life.
How it all started...
I found an article about a girl who had been living "waste free" for two years. My friend Cassie saw that I shared it, and she suggested that we do a waste free month. I was hesitant, as any normal person would be, especially because I stated I wanted waste free living to be a "life goal", not something I wanted to achieve right away. But the more I started to think about it, I thought, what's the point in waiting longer when I can get started right now? Yes, it's a challenge and sometimes an inconvenience, especially as a busy college student, but in the long run it's all worth it.
Why am I doing it?
"That's crazy (insane/impossible/nuts/cool, but not for me)!!" you may say... Yes, indeed, it is all of the above, but it's very doable! If you take a moment to think about it, this world is filled with wasteful products...everything is wrapped in plastic and layers of packaging, and if you think about it long enough, that is a really overwhelming thought to imagine of all the waste produced by the billions of people in this world! This is my effort to leave less of a footprint on this world. It can all start with the smallest steps.
What are the rules?
There aren't any set "rules", this title/challenge is just something my friends and I came up with, but basically, we're just finding alternative ways to eat and shop and not produce any waste! Of course, there's food waste, but that can be used for composting; and yes, I still use toilet paper, and a few other products that I haven't had the funds for to switch over to yet or haven't found a better solution for. But of course, this isn't just something I want to do for one month; it's the change in the way I live, so not all the changes need to be made so abruptly, because really it's a lesson and a journey to learning a new way of living.
I'll be writing about my adventures of being waste free including my experiences and lessons learned here on my blog, so keep checking back for more! :)
